Service Description

As part of a community partnership with the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, we will have an art show on Small Business Saturday at Studio Forget-Me-Not! RSVP to the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/352496117188549 You will have the opportunity to support artist of our local immigrant community and purchase some of their beautiful embroidered and rug punched art. This event will feature punch needle embroidery from over 30 individual artists. The beautiful and intricate work on display emerged from a series of fiber art workshops provided to immigrant support groups by the Outreach Committee of the Fiber Art Guild of Pittsburgh this past year. The project reflects both the blending of old and new cultures and the long-standing relationship between the Fiber Arts Guild and Jewish Family and Community Services, a local immigrant resettlement agency. This funding enabled teaching artist Kirsten Ervin to teach needle punch embroidery, a technique often used in rug making. Since both rug making and embroidery feature prominently in both Turkish and Ukrainian cultures, this new art form allows the groups to further express their old and new cultures. Common Threads brings communities together. This project was completed in partnership with the Rivers of Steel Heritage Area. Funding was provided in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, Heritage Area Program Fund, Environmental Stewardship Fund, administered by the Rivers of Steel Heritage Corp. Additional support was provided by a grant from Awesome Pittsburgh and the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh.
